NYC Generation Tech – Free Technology Entrepreneurship Summer Bootcamp for Low Income High School Students

The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), in partnership with theNYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), is proud to present NYC Generation Tech (NYCGT), a new pilot program that infuses the topics of design, technology, and mobile app development with lessons on entrepreneurship and lean startup methodologies.  Open to high school students during the summer and fall of 2012, NYCGT aims to:

Social Capitale | NYC Generation Tech

  1. Grow youth interest and activity in the business, entrepreneurship and technology sectors
  2. Bolster technology entrepreneurship in NYC high school students
  3. Connect students with existing networks of NYC tech entrepreneurs, start-ups, universities, tech companies, and venture capitalists
  4. Help strengthen NYC’s entrepreneurial culture and environment in the long run

NYCGT is built around the following four components that seek to educate and inspire:

  1. Summer Tech-Bootcamp: During a rigorous, 2-week bootcamp, students will learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, develop technical skills related to mobile app development, and explore myriad pathways to local careers in technology through experiential learning activities, case studies, guest speaker presentations, and field trips. In the second week of bootcamp, students will address this year’s “My City, My Schools” challenge and propose app ideas that “improves the quality of life for students in New York City.” Working in 5-person teams, students will start creating an Android mobile app using MIT’s AppInventor and a business plan around it. (Aug. 6-10, 13-17)
  2. Fall Sessions: During the fall, students will attend 9 weeknight sessions to further explore topics in entrepreneurship and technology, finish building their mobile apps, and develop pitch presentations and business plans for their app concept with the help of the program’s instructors and mentors from NYC’s tech-sector. Students will reflect on their experiences throughout the program using blogs and videorecording equipment. (Sept 12, 19; Oct 3, 10, 24; Nov 7, 14, 28; Dec 5)
  3. Mobile App Pitch Competition & Awards Ceremony: In December, students will demo and pitch their finished apps and business plans to a panel of judges from the technology and venture capital community. Winning teams receive cash prizes and all students will be honored at an awards ceremony.
  4. Mentorship & Enterprise Discovery: Students will receive mentorship from local tech professionals and undergraduate and graduate students. Students will also visit NYC tech companies, startups, and incubators to speak to entrepreneurs and be exposed to various entrepreneurial environments.
